Corporate Responsibility

“Charity begins at home” is a well-known, often versed proverb.  This adage was embraced during the construction of TIH’s Head Office, Auto & General Park, when around 3000 Diepsloot residents were employed by the developers.  This employment was estimated to have benefitted over 20 000 members of the Diepsloot community.

When TIH moved into Auto & General Park it was decided that most of TIH’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) donations, excluding those from the 1st for Women Foundation, would be combined to focus on the Diepsloot community.

The aim of TIH’s CSI strategy is to enhance the livelihoods of individuals in Diepsloot through skills development and job placement to reduce poverty.  We have already made generous donations to the following Diepsloot-based organisations:

The Diepsloot Foundation

The Diepsloot Foundation is a Section 21 Company, formed by St Mungo's United Church with the objective of channelling funds, skills and resources into sustainable projects that will benefit and build the competencies of individuals within the Diepsloot community. Our funding provides ABET (Adult Basic Education & Training), carpentry and sewing classes to students and these courses are accredited by the Independent Examination Board.

The Food Security Programme

Our Food Security Programme in Diepsloot is a high impact, high growth, social enterprise that provides Diepsloot residents with the infrastructure, training and support they need to start and manage micro agri-businesses. It also provides them with food security for themselves and their family. Situated at crèches in Diepsloot, the programme also aims to provide access to fresh vegetables to the children, especially those in the vital stages of early development. TIH’s grant contributes to: training adults in crop production, building and activating grow zones with grower positions, and supporting and monitoring 12 grow zones and 12 ECD centres in Diepsloot.

OLICO

OLICO knows that understanding and passing maths in school is key to unlocking opportunities after school. So, using tutoring and technology, it makes math’s make sense for the Diepsloot youth.

LEAP

LEAP schools provide student-centered, maths and science-focused education to economically disadvantaged students from grades 8 to 12. It focuses on enabling the self-awareness necessary for each student’s growth to healthy adulthood, and to ensuring optimal academic results which will allow for choices for lifelong learning and a fulfilling future. TIH’s grant goes towards grade 11 student camps, teachers workshops and purchasing paper/video material.

The 1st for Women Foundation

The 1st for Women Foundation and Lawyers Against Abuse (LvA) are also assisting our Diepsloot neighbours with holistic legal and psychosocial support to victims of gender-based violence. By providing integrated legal and psychosocial support, LvA ensures that the survivors legal, emotional and psychological needs are met. LvA also works closely with local police and courts to improve the response of the justice system to gender-based violence.

TIH for Good

TIH’s Employee Volunteer Programme (EVP) is called TIH for Good. This is an online platform that connects TIH employees that want to make a difference to causes that need our help. Employees can volunteer their time and skills, donate goods or give back on their own terms by creating an Offer to Causes that are aligned to our CSI strategy.
